Munson Wins First All-Star Game in Extras

Frank Powers
With the bases loaded, Frank Powers lines a ball to left field. Tom Becker, ranging far to his right, catches it, spins, and throws home. Ed White races home and slides under catcher Ashton Finley's tag—SAFE!

It took 11 innings, but the Munson League had won the the Adult Baseball League's first All-Star Game by the score of 4-3.

Ed White
The tense game had a sloppy ending. The sac fly from Powers should have been the inning's fourth out. The Clemente League's infield committed errors on consecutive plays to start the 11th. Jim Crawford let a ground ball from Carlos Martínez bounce through his legs, and Scott Andrews nicely bare-handed White's infield roller but threw the ball into the dugout. An intentional walk and a force out at the plate brought up Powers.

Lorenzo Rodríguez
Lorenzo Rodríguez, the best player in baseball, displayed his considerable talents. He hit the game's only home run—an incredible 512-foot blast to right field—and also made the game's best defensive play, leaping at the wall and pulling a Colin St. John home run back into the park. Despite the Clemente League's loss, Z-Rod won Player of the Game.

Bob Watkins
The game's first run came in the third when Vic Jennings singled in Bob Watkins. Watkins, who reached base on a fielder's choice, had just put himself in scoring position by stealing second—the game's only stolen base.

Z-Rod's home run tied the game, but the Munson League struck again in the sixth. With two outs, Marc Murphy hit Troy Tracy with the pitch and gave up a single to Lawrence Fox. Martínez doubled down the first-base line, easily scoring both Tracy and the speedy Fox.

Jim Crawford
In the eighth, the Clemente League tied the game again. Marvin Welch singled and Andrews doubled. Finley singled in Welch, and Crawford hit a sac fly to deep center to drive in Andrews.

Del Hubble
Del Hubble received the hard-luck loss. The Barn Owl closer came into the game in the eighth with the bases loaded and one out. He promptly worked out of the jam, then stayed in the game and retired the side in order in both the ninth and 10th innings. He was pulled in the 11th after Andrews's throwing error. Thus he received the loss despite allowing neither a hit nor a walk.

Curt Dempsey recorded the first hit in All-Star history, a single in the first. He also singled in the third but was caught stealing by Artie Sanders.

Each team played their full roster. Kevin Carey was the only player to play the entire game.
