Munson League Gold Gloves

by Gary Altman

Being a relative newb to the OOTP Game (just over one year and ABL is the only league I’m in) the stats and information the game offers is second to none. I’m still finding new things about the game and then when you delve a little bit deeper more information is waiting for you there as well.

One such thing is the Gold Glove Awards. When looking over the previous winners there were some very intriguing things.

Now in just two seasons, quite the sample size I might add, we’ve had just 18 Gold Glove winners in the Thurman Munson League. Just off the cuff I found 5 interesting things about the awards given out so far. I would venture to say that offense is really not used as a criteria in the awarding of Gold Gloves, which is in stark contrast to real life MLB (think back to Rafael Palmeiro winning a Gold Glove at 1B for the Texas Rangers when he played just 18 games at first base!).

Tidbits:
Eric Black
  • The TML has only one player who has won the Gold Glove Award twice, Mile High’s center-fielder Eric Black, who appears to be on pace to win the award for a third straight year.
  • The pitchers' Gold Glove has been owned by the San Francisco Earthquakes. Two seasons in a row the Gold Glove Award has made its way to the Bay Area.
  • Las Vegas and Eureka, the TML representatives to the World Series the last two seasons, have not had a Gold Glove winner. This could be used in the TML to make an argument that defense is an overrated commodity. Just looking at the team with the most Gold Gloves, the Mile High Mustangs, who have won 5 awards, they sport just a .500 record over the first two seasons (162-162) and finished second and third in their division the last two seasons.
  • The 2012 Gold Glove Winner for the Catcher Position is UNKNOWN. This is kinda bizarre and we thought this only applied to our A-Ball Level’s having the “Unknown” players. I’m sure somewhere we can find this information out on who won the award in 2012.
  • Three Gold Glove Winners are now toiling their skills in AAA, including Mile High’s 2013 winner, catcher Len “Brewski” Brewer.
Next up will be the Roberto Clemente League Gold Glove Winners.
