Maurice Gould |
Gould's 2014 would be a career year for any other pitcher, but for him it was a slight comedown. In each of the previous two seasons, he won 20+ games, had an ERA under 2.50, and struck out over 300 batters. This year, he went 18-7 with a 3.19 ERA and 248 strikeouts. Tonight, the dominant Gould shows up: he whiffs a season-high 14 batters over 7 1/3 innings. His only mistake comes in the fourth inning, when he gives up a home run to Maple shortstop Doug Smith.
Roberto Martínez |
Martínez had even more of a comedown this season: the Marauder ace went 8-11 with a 4.19 ERA. But the dominant Martínez shows up tonight: he strikes out a season-high 10 batters over 6 1/3 innings and also only one run to score: in the second, Dave Lewis doubles home Colin St. John.
Gould and Martínez leave with the game tied, 1-1.
Cale Hines |
In the ninth, the bottom of Maple's lineup manufactures a run—with some help from the Jokers. Cale Hines singles, then takes second on a Nick Fox wild pitch. Jorge Rodríguez then grounds the ball to backup third baseman Lou Gibson, but Gibson throws the ball over the head of first baseman Kevin Carey. Hines scores, and the Marauders escape with the victory, 2-1.
With the win, Maple now has home-field advantage. More importantly, they manage to win despite facing the league's best pitcher.
The Joker offense, best in the Munson League this season, was hardly seen tonight: batting champ Phillip Smith went 0-for-4 with four strikeouts while on-base machine Kevin Carey went 0-for-5. If Las Vegas is going to come back, they will need to step up.
Fun fact: Marauder and Joker relievers strike out seven batters, making a grand total of 31 strikeouts on the night. Maple leads the series, 1-0.
October 9: Nottinghamshire 0, Seattle 6. Kent Rose pitches a two-hit shutout—taking a no-hitter into the seventh—and the Sasquatch defeat the Outlaws.
When Rose made the All-Star game this season, he was 10-4 with a 3.16 ERA, but he struggled mightily in the second half, going 3-4 the rest of the way and posting an ERA over 6.00 in August and September. Seattle fans wondered which Rose would show up in the playoffs. The Sasquatch ace answers his critics tonight with his best game of the season. He pitches a no-hitter until Joe O'Neal leads off the seventh with a single. In the end, Rose allows only two singles and two walks.
The Sasquatch bats tag Nottinghamshire starter Larry Smiley for six runs in five innings of work. Dane Moore hits a two-run double, Jacob Rowe hits a solo home run, and Blake Reynolds hits a three-run home run.
Nottinghamshire is making their first playoff appearance, and a rash of late-season injuries means that they are doing so without help from several key players: ace Bob Rudyard, second baseman Danny Burris, and right fielder Allen Greene being the most prominent. Third baseman William McKenzie, also out, may return as soon as game two. The Outlaws will need production from their three top hitters—Jim Crawford, Leslie Whitney, and Byron Bryant—who went a combined 1-for-11 today. Seattle leads the series, 1-0.
