- South Carolina took two of three from rival Greenville, slugging their way to 8-2 and 9-4 victories. Greenville's Joe Russell silenced the Bombers' bats in the third game, pitching eight innings of shutout baseball.
- Dallas and Boston played the closest game of the year: it took 11 innings, but the Cardinals squeaked out a 1-0 victory when Abel Baker singled home Ed White. Boston's Norm Jackson pitched eight scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and one walk while striking out 11. The pitchers' duels continued in the next two games, but Dallas won both: 2-1 and 2-0.
- Mile High became the first team to win a series against Seattle. The Mustangs took two of three in a series in which all games were decided by one run. The middle game went to 12 innings before Eric Black doubled home Danny Hardy to win the game 3-2.
- Over in the Golden State, two teams off to good starts played a tight series. The San Francisco Earthquakes took two of three from San Diego: 6-4, 1-2, 2-1.
- Kansas City's António Gómez pitched into the 10th inning, going 9 2/3 and giving up only one run on six hits and no walks. The Tornadoes won the game in the 11th. The performance was just what manager Damian Connor order, as the starting pitching has been a real sore spot for the team.
- Greenville's Kieran Simmons had the week's best hitting performance, going five for five with two home runs against Jersey. Unfortunately, the 84's came up a run short, losing 10-9 and stranding the tying run on third base.
- In a battle of the top teams entering the week, the Seattle Sasquatch swept the Las Vegas Jokers.
- The Minnesota Berserkers won a pair of tough series and went 4-2 on the week. In the process, they overtook San Diego for the Tony La Russa Division lead.
- Los Angeles Evil Empire had the best week in the ABL, going 6-0 and wresting the Earl Weaver Division lead from Boston.
- Players of the Week. In the RCL, Seattle Sasquatch CF Edgar Johnson went 12-29 with 2 HR. He becomes the third different Seattle hitter to win Player of the Week. (Perhaps they should move the fences back?) In the TML, Boston Cardinals LF Alex Austin went 12-22 with 1 HR.

One thing I didn't mention: injuries. Man, have there been a lot of injuries, and Montgomery really got screwed this week when Jorge Cruz went down. He was the #1 draft pick (though he hadn't pitched like it lately) and will miss a year.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I caught the Cruz injury too. Brutal!
DeleteThought I'd check on interleague play. The Thurmon Munson League has the advantage over the Roberto Clemente League. Here is how its has broken down so far:
ReplyDeleteTommy Lasorda 18 vs. Earl Weaver 18
Tony La Russa 15 vs. Billy Martin 21
Bobby Cox 17 vs. Sparky Anderson 19
TOTAL: Roberto Clemente 50 vs. Thurmon Munson 58
Go Thurman and nice to see the Billy Martin division I belong too is representing very well ;-)
ReplyDeleteThurman and Billy....being a Yankee fan I couldn't ask for a better division/conference!
